1. Why should I study with Enhance Education?

To help improve your standard of English – to be more confident and accurate in your English language skills. All our teachers are native speakers and university graduates with formal teaching qualifications.  Our professionally qualified and experienced teachers will ensure students receive the most dynamic up-to-date techniques focusing on the key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

What courses do you provide?

We have classes for the following groups:
  • Pre-School children aged 4 – 6 years
  • Primary School students in Standards  1 - 6
  • Secondary School students in Forms 1 - 6
  • Young Adults aged 16 – 20 years
  • General English for Adults
  • Conversation Course for Adults
  • Business English
  • Exam Preparation – eg for IELTS, IGCSE

Are your classes and lessons the same at all centres?

Yes, we only employ qualified native English speakers. This is the case at all centres, and we generally follow the same course outline except where individual teachers take specialised courses.

4. What is a Placement Test?

The placement test is to identify a student’s English proficiency level so that we can place them in an appropriate class.  The test takes about 40 minutes, 30 minutes for the written test and 10 minutes for the speaking test. The normal cost is RM80 but as a Special Offer the test is FREE if you register for any of our courses in 2012.  The test result is valid for one year.

5. How long do your courses last?

Courses for Primary Standards 1–6 and Secondary Forms 1- 6 are 20 hours over a period of 10 weeks.  Adult courses are 30 hours over a period of 10 weeks.  Other courses vary in length so please enquire at Customer Services for more information.

6. How often are the classes?

Courses for Standard 1 – 6 and Forms 1- 6 are 2 hours once a week at weekends, whilst  adult classes are 1½ hours twice a week on weekdays or 3 hours once a week on weekdays.

7. How much do the courses cost?

Pre-school, Primary, Secondary school and adult courses start from RM590 – please ask Customer Services for details.

8. How large are the classes?

  • The maximum number of students in the pre-school classes is 12.
  • All our other classes vary between 16 and 20 students.  The maximum is always 20 per class.

9. How do I register or re-register for a class?

If you are a new student please see below.  If you are an existing student and wish to re-register then you can do so at any time, but we advise you to re-register early to ensure you get a place on our popular courses.  You can also book ahead for future terms by paying a small deposit that is refundable should you cancel your booking in good time.

10. Do I get a certificate?

All learners who attend a minimum of 80% of classes in any term will receive a Certificate of Attendance for that term.   Learners who complete a full course will receive an Enhance Education Certificate of Achievement based on our own assessments.

11. Who are your teachers?

Our teachers are native English speakers from UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, etc.  All are university graduates, are professionally qualified as language teachers, and have experience in teaching English:

Dr Tom Craig-Cameron PhD, BSc: Principal.
Formerly Director of the British Council in Malaysia and Pakistan, he has many years of management experience in education including chairing the quality assurance scheme for English language schools throughout the UK.  He was also Counsellor for Education and Culture at the British Embassy in China and Education Attaché at the British Embassy in Washington DC, USA.

Mr Ross Beattie BA, PGCE: Deputy Principal.
A very experienced classroom teacher who specialises in English literature as well as language.  He has taught at prestigious schools in UK and Australia and most recently at the Garden International School in Kuala Lumpur where some of his students won international honours in IGCSE English Literature.

Mrs Emma Talbot BA, DELTA, CELTA: Senior Teacher.
Holds a double degree in Psychology and Sociology and is qualified as a teacher trainer for Cambridge University’s English language teaching programmes.  She has taught English to all levels and age groups in various countries including UK, Australia, Taiwan and Malaysia – where she taught in the British Council in both Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Ms Heather James BA, TESOL: Teacher.
An experienced teacher of English to students of all levels, Heather has taught International students in the UK from many different countries. Most recently she taught university students in Kuala Lumpur at International House. Heather also has many years of experience as a trainer in new media techniques, specialising in teaching video production to 13-19 year olds.

Mrs Sue Back BA, PGCE, CELTA: Teacher.
A highly qualified and professionally accredited teacher in UK where she specialised in teaching primary school students, Sue also is a qualified English language teacher and has taught English to junior and secondary students in Japan and Malaysia. She is specially trained in teaching handwriting, spelling and reading skills.

Mrs Prestina White Foster MEd, BA, CertTESL, ACEM: Teacher.
A highly qualified and very experienced teacher, Tina has taught academic subjects as well as English in UK, Uganda, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.  She covers a wide range of skills from being Montessori trained for young children to holding an Advanced Certificate in Educational Management, has taught at junior and secondary levels, and has managed education centres in Medan and Singapore.

Mrs Anne L. O’Doherty MBA, BA, PGDE, DipTESL, ACCA: Teacher.
A fully qualified accountant and teacher, Anne has many years of experience in teaching both English and accounting to students in Penang.  She was a Principal Lecturer in Accounting in DISTED College and before that she taught general and business English at the British Council for whom she was also an IELTS Examiner; latterly she has been teaching English writing and study skills.

Felicity Whitten DipEd, BEd, MEd: Teacher.
An experienced teacher who has worked as a classroom teacher in primary schools in Australia the UK and Malaysia, Felicity has also worked as a language teacher in Kuala Lumpur before moving with her family to Penang. She has a particular specialisation in Early Childhood Literacy.
Alan Hudson BA (Hons), TESOL: Teacher.
Has taught students from a range of ages and cultural backgrounds at prestigious language schools in London, as well as performing in-house language training at a major international bank.  Alan also has a background in publishing and developing corporate e-learning programmes for a major UK government department.
Mandy Jones  BA (Hons), TEFL: Teacher.
After many years working in banking and finance in New York, Paris and London, Mandy worked as a teacher of both Business and General English in Paris. She also taught French to students in the UK before relocating to Malaysia where she has taught English for the past two years.

12. Do I need to buy a course book?

Course books are subsidised. Where one is required you pay a one-off Materials Fee of RM40 in Term 1and you will receive your course book when you register for your course. It is then yours to keep.  In most courses you will also be given a lot of Supplementary Materials selected by your teacher: these too are free and are yours to keep.

13. When can I start?

Our courses are split into four terms and students are encouraged to join at the start of the year, however students can join at any time depending on space availability in the desired class. Ask a Customer Service Representatives at a centre near you for assistance.

14. What will I do in class?

Our teachers use the communicative approach to language teaching and learning. This uses pair and group work, team work, language games, quizzes and competitions, and promotes 'learning through doing'. Homework tasks are regularly set to support classroom learning. Classes consist of speaking, listening, reading and writing activities to help students’ practical communication skills. There are opportunities to strengthen understanding of grammar and extend students’ range of vocabulary.

How do I sign up for a course?

The primary, secondary and adults courses start four times a year in January, April, July and October.

Holiday classes are held during the school term holidays in March, August and December.
